Judah Lifschitz moderated Bisnow's 2nd Annual Bisnow Construction Summit

Shapiro, Lifschitz & Schram’s Judah Lifschitz moderated Bisnow’s 2nd Annual Bisnow Construction Summit on December 3, 2013, and led a discussion by construction industry leaders of the greater Washington, DC, area about market trends, challenges, opportunities, and issues affecting the industry.

Panel members included senior executives of Gilbane Building Company, Boston Properties, Bozzuto Construction, DFS Construction, Moseley Construction Group, Capital Construction Consultants, and First Potomac Realty Trust. Among the topics discussed were the increase in demand for multifamily projects and the downsizing of multifamily units in response to demographic changes, which also have resulted in consumer demand for high-end amenities. Panel members addressed ongoing market challenges such as the decrease in the number of large-scale construction projects and the highly competitive bidding environment for repositioning commercial buildings, where existing buildings are renovated to enhance functional space, improve energy efficiency and technology, and obtain LEED certifications. With regard to long-term challenges facing the industry, panel members cited the aging population of skilled laborers, smaller pool of craft talent, and need for the industry to implement a strategy that will develop the next generation of skilled craft labor. The panel also discussed opportunities for contractors to work with developers and architects to develop creative solutions to changing market demands.

During the panel discussion, Shapiro, Lifschitz & Schram’s success in forming partnerships between owners and contractors for building projects was noted. For example, in the past year, Shapiro, Lifschitz & Schram was instrumental in "marrying" quality developer/owner clients with quality general contractor clients, resulting in the award of more than $250 million in new construction.

In addition to the panel discussion, the 2nd Annual Construction Summit fostered informal discussions and networking opportunities among contractors, owners, and industry leaders. "The Bisnow summit is a great opportunity to bring together the best and brightest in the field, and today did not disappoint," Lifschitz said after the event.

Lifschitz is Co-President of Shapiro, Lifschitz & Schram, where he heads the firm's litigation and trial practice.
