SLS attorneys successfully represent pro bono client in family court trial

Laura Fraher and Kelley Halliburton, members of the SLS trial and construction group, recently secured a favorable judgment in connection with their representation of a pro bono client in a contested divorce proceeding pending in D.C. Superior Court.

Laura and Kelley have represented the firm’s client from the initial filing of pleadings in family court through trial. Over the course of the so-far year-and-a-half engagement, they filed pleadings, and conducted discovery and participated in ADR proceedings. The case was ultimately tried before a judge in family court. The case addressed a variety of issues, including the distribution of marital assets and debts and an award of spousal support, as well as ancillary issues relating to credit protection and taxation. The firm continues to provide representation to its client, and is now working to secure a final judgment from the court and implement the ruling.

Shapiro, Lifschitz & Schram believes that attorneys have a fundamental obligation to help those in need and give back to the community. In an effort to better meet that obligation, SLS participates in a pro bono referral program administered by the Legal Aid Society of the District of Columbia. That program was the source of this pro bono representation. The firm’s lawyers hope that, through the program, SLS will have the opportunity to provide valuable pro bono services in many types of cases, including housing, family law, public benefits, and appellate matters.
