Shapiro Lifschitz & Schram Expands Trial Group with Addition of Barry Fleishman

Former Kilpatrick Townsend partner will lead firm’s new Insurance Coverage Litigation practice

Barry Fleishman has joined Shapiro, Lifschitz & Schram PC as a principal in the firm’s Trial Group. A veteran litigator with more than 30 years’ Big Law experience, Fleishman will lead the firm’s new Insurance Coverage Litigation practice, which will focus on complex policyholder insurance coverage issues.

According to Steven Schram, managing principal and co-president of the firm, “I have known Barry for almost three decades, and we are thrilled to have him join the firm and enhance our client services with his unparalleled knowledge of complex insurance coverage issues. Barry understands that moving to take full advantage of existing coverage and aggressively obtain recoveries from insurers when a loss occurs is vital for every business. That is why he chose to practice at a topnotch boutique law firm, where conflicts are extremely minimal and he can provide deeper and better client service.”

Before joining the firm, Fleishman was a partner at Kilpatrick Townsend & Stockton LLP in Washington, D.C., where he most recently served on the firm’s Executive Committee. His policyholder-based insurance coverage practice focuses on representing clients with respect to a broad scope of insurance coverages including property damage and business interruption, general liability, director and officer liability, cyber liability, and fiduciary liability. Fleishman has represented clients in multi-million dollar coverage matters arising out of historic events such as the attacks on 9/11, Hurricane Katrina, and the fallout from Enron’s demise, as well as major national issues such as environmental contamination, mold, construction defects and resulting damage, officer and director wrongful acts, and cyber attacks.

“I’m excited to bring my practice to Shapiro, Lifschitz & Schram, and believe the boutique and collaborative environment here will allow me to provide even better and more personal service to my clients,” said Fleishman.

Fleishman was recognized in The Best Lawyers in America® for Insurance Law in 2017 and the seven years immediately before then. He has also been recognized for the past seven years as a Washington, D.C., “Super Lawyer” in the area of Insurance Coverage and a “Top 100 Lawyer” in Washington, D.C., from 2011–2016, as selected by Super Lawyers magazine. In 2011, Fleishman was recommended in the area of Insurance by Legal 500 US and recognized by Legal Media in its 2013 and 2014 Guide to the World’s Leading Insurance and Reinsurance Lawyers. He was listed in the International Who’s Who of Business Lawyers in 2014 for Insurance and the International Who’s Who of Reinsurance and Insurance Lawyers for 2013, 2015 and 2016.

Fleishman is deeply involved in and fully committed to civil rights and liberties through both the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and Anti-Defamation League (ADL). He is a collaborator for the ACLU and a Washington, D.C., regional and executive board member and National Commission member for the ADL. He is also the chair of the ADL’s Washington, D.C., Region Civil Rights Committee.

Fleishman received his law degree from the New York University School of Law and graduated magna cum laude from New York University.
