Maryland's move away from LEED certified construction

The Maryland House and Senate recently unanimously approved House Bill 207 which was approved by the Governor on May 15th.  This new law, which will take effect October 1, 2014, may be a critical step in Maryland’s move away from LEED Certified Construction.

DC's NEW SUSTAINABLE SITE - CANAL PARK

Washington DC's new Canal Park is the latest project for the Sustainable Sites Initiative.  Canal Park, a large scale development of a former school bus parking lot, will seek LEED Gold Certification.  The lot will be transformed into an outdoor community space featuring pedestrian walkways, seating, pavillions, performance areas, artwork, and winter ice skating.

Mayor Gray Envisions a "Green DC" by 2032

District of Columbia Mayor Vincent Gray in an address to developers and other construction professionals last month, announced plans for building a "Green DC" by the year 2032.  According to Gray, by then the District's population is expected to be above 900,000 and Gray wants DC to be the healthiest, greenest and most livable place in the country.

GREEN INITIATIVES APPROVED FOR ARLINGTON COUNTY NEIGHBORHOOD

Last month the Arlington County Board approved the Columbia Pike Neighborhoods Area Plan. The new plan seeks to transform the Columbia Pike neighborhood, or “the Pike”, into a more urban, walkable and lively Main Street through several "green" and "sustainable" improvements to the land- and street-scapes and by adding up to 14,800 new apartments and condo units while also preserving the roughly 4,500 affordable housing units for the low-to-moderate income level families.

NEW ENERGY CODE IMPACT STUDY BARES LIGHT ON ADDED CONSTRUCTION AND HOUSING COSTS

As cities across the country continue to adopt current versions of the International Energy Conservation Code (IECC), new research jointly commissioned by the National Multi Housing Council and the National Apartment Association warns that the new 2009 and 2012 IECCs could significantly increase local construction and housing costs – which could mean higher renting rates for those 1/3 of Americans who rent their housing.

NEW EPA RULES COULD SPUR $9.6 BILLION IN CONSTRUCTION FOR POWER INDUSTRY

Two new U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rules taking effect in 2012 are expected to spur construction as power plants comply with new EPA standards.  The Cross-State Air Pollution Rule (CSAPR), and the Mercury and Air Toxics Standards (MATS) address power plant emissions, with MATS comprising the first-ever national standards targeted to reduce mercury and other emissions from power plants.
