Richard Karpinski is a seasoned trial attorney with more than two decades of experience in complex litigation for clients in the air transportation and insurance industries. He has represented some of the largest companies in the world in numerous matters involving, among other things, airline disasters, airport building restrictions, aircraft and component manufacturing, lease agreements, international and domestic operations and regulation, liability insurance, life insurance, annuities and other financial products. He also has experience working on products liability cases for pharmaceutical manufacturers and other companies. He is particularly skilled in handling class actions, multidistrict litigation and other mass-adjudication cases.
Published decisions in which Mr. Karpinski has been involved include, among others, In re LifeUSA, Holding, Inc., 242 F.3d 136 (3d Cir. 2001) (victory for defendant, reversing class action certification below) ; Inlow v. Henderson, Daily, et al., 787 N.E.2d 385 (Ind. App. 2003) (recovered significant attorneys fees and costs against plaintiffs for frivolous litigation); Freeman v. Pacific Life, 2003 WL 1207892 (N.C. App.2003) (successful appellate defense of class action settlement); Hamilton v. AIG Life Insurance Co., 182 F. Supp.2d 39 (D.D.C. 2002) (insurance policy interpretation); Conseco Group Risk Management Co. v. Ahrens Financial Systems, Inc., 2001 WL 219627 (N.D. Ill. 2001); Conseco Group Risk Management Co. v. Ahrens Financial Systems, Inc., 2000 WL 1889637 (N.D. Ill. 2000) (contested venue battle in federal court); and Mapfre Reinsurance Corp. v. London & Edinburgh Insurance Co. No. 03-2218 (D. N.J. 2003) (forum non conveniens victory).
Mr. Karpinski is a graduate of the Catholic University of America School of Law, where he was on the Law Review, and the University of Maryland, where he earned a degree in English, with a minor in Business. He is admitted to practice in the District of Columbia and Maryland, as well as before a number of federal district and appellate courts. He also has appeared pro hac vice in numerous other courts throughout the country.
