Experience.
Reed joined Shapiro, Lifschitz & Schram in 2002. Reed has extensive experience as a transactional attorney and practices in all areas of commercial real estate and general business transactional law. He focuses his practice on retail, commercial office and industrial leasing for landlords and tenants, real estate finance (including construction financing), real estate development and the acquisition and disposition of businesses and commercial real estate projects. Reed's broad range of transactional experience enables him to meet a wide variety of his clients' needs – and this is what they have come to know and like about working with him. Reed's clients not only rely on him for counseling and legal representation, but they frequently refer other clients to him which is particularly rewarding.
Reed also represents numerous medical and dental practices in the Washington, DC metropolitan area in connection with their formation, leases, property acquisitions, partnership agreements and employment agreements.
Prior to Shapiro, Lifschitz & Schram, Reed was associated with the Real Estate and Finance Practice Group of DLA Piper and, previous to that, the Bankruptcy and Commercial Litigation Practice Group of Dickstein Shapiro, LLP. These experiences taught Reed the value of listening to the client and acting as the client's business counselor as opposed to just doing the legal work as a routine transaction. Following law school, Reed clerked for the Honorable Paul Mannes, former Chief Judge of the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of Maryland. Early on, Reed learned the importance of paying attention to facts and details and the difference these make when it comes to the practice of law.
Passion.
Reed derives great personal satisfaction from the practice of law. For Reed, there is no greater reward than sitting at the closing table at the end of a transaction and observing the satisfaction of all parties involved. In order to get there, however, he understands that his primary role is to be the facilitator in the transaction. This role may seem simple enough, but it can be easily overlooked and forgotten in the heat of the transaction. While Reed's first concern is to represent his clients' interests as zealously as possible, he knows that it is equally as important to explain the risks of the various issues to his clients and then assist them in crafting innovative solutions which will be acceptable to all parties. For Reed, each client's case is like his own and he will do no less for his clients than he would do for himself.
Reed's clients appreciate the level of personal attention and commitment that he provides to them and the practice of law. One client recently stated, "I value Reed's judgment and, in particular, I appreciate his responsiveness and availability whenever I require his counsel." Reed has a passion for his clients and the practice of law, which has allowed him to cultivate many meaningful personal relationships over the years. Indeed, many of his clients have become his friends, which is the best compliment that a client can give.
