"Impact of Surfside Condo Collapse with Judah Lifschitz," Emerging Litigation Podcast

Shapiro Lifschitz & Schram Principal and Co-President Judah Lifschitz joined Emerging Litigation Podcast host Tom Hagy to discuss the impact of the recent condo collapse in Surfside, Fla. and the litigation surrounding the tragic event. As the story continues to unravel, attention turns to what exactly went wrong and how other building owners and managers can learn from these mishaps moving forward.

“This tragedy has had a huge immediate impact and will have a substantial impact in the years to come,” Lifschitz says. “The longer-term impact involves the inspection of buildings and the quality of the inspection of buildings. It will have an impact on government regulation and legislation that goes into not only the inspection of existing buildings, but likely also construction in beachside communities.”

He continues, “It would not surprise me if overtime we saw changes in condo laws, perhaps legislation with respect to required insurance or liability.”

Other condo associations should consider this an electric shock of warning that immediate response is required to address and deal with any dormant issues impacting their buildings. Contractors and engineers who perform work for condominiums should take the news as a wakeup call to review best practices for communicating warning signs.
